Ottawa clinic to offer methadone

An Ottawa clinic will offer methadone to treat heroin addiction.

Great Heights Family Medicine, 315 E. McKinley Road, will offer methadone as a treatment option for those addicted to heroin and prescription opioids beginning Thursday, June 16. The clinic also offers the drugs suboxone and vivitrol to fight narcotics addiction.

Methadone mimicks the effects of heroin and works to wean a user from heroin.

Dr. Adeyemi Fatoki, the director of Great Heights, said there are no other facilities in the area licensed to offer methadone. The nearest clinics are in Bloomington, Peoria, Aurora and Chicago. Patients from La Salle County have to travel to such cities as often as six days per week to receive the medication.

Fatoki noted there are different treatments, with methadone being one option. His practice also will provide counseling. Further, Fatoki noted he is going to be trained to insert an implantable form of suboxone.

Fatoki said there is need for a local methadone clinic, because heroin overdoses in La Salle County jumped from four in 2014 to 14 in 2015, with five in 2013. Total overdoses — from all drugs, including heroin — in 2015 were 28, with 18 the year before and 26 in 2013.

Great Heights Family Medicine can be reached at 815-434-0228 or great-heights.com. Great Heights also has an office in Calumet City.
